Here is the hat that made Panama hats famous, the Optimo. The straw for this fine, light men's summer hat (made known by British travelers, expats and empire builders throughout the tropics) is woven in Ecuador, where they affectionately call this Panama hat 'the Natural'. TR wore one, as did other Presidents, Emperors and Kings. The panama hat is finished optimally, of course - with a black grosgrain band and cloth sweatband. Imported from Ecuador.
