Men's caps and hats for spring and summer wear
like newsboys, ivys
and ballcaps,
are brought to your head in all sorts of warm weather materials: linen,
silk
and even cashmere,
with blends
tossed in for good luck and good cheer, and a bit of good measure. You know
the names attached to these caps, certainly: they include Anthony Peto, Borsalino, Wigens, Christys', and Stetson, and they're
all awaiting your pleasure and wolf whistles. Variations on a theme are abundant,
such as with The Russell's satin
lining, and the delicate use of color that creates a subtle burnt umber plaid in the impeccable Borsalino Amadeo newsboy. If it's springtime colors you seek, the stingy brim trilby hats from Anthony Peto of Paris are certainly worth several love-filled glances. Not only are these beautifully crafted hats made from richly textured linen -- each hat is lined in contrast linen. It's all in the details, mes amis! Borsalino details its comfortable linen rex (in Washed Black with a just a hint of loden) by finishing it with a cool mesh lining and trimming the band with contrast embroidery.

There's a classic
ivy from Wigens (The Dagmar), but I couldn't decide between colors, so I'll have to leave it up to you to select -- if you can -- from yellow, black, white or red. There
are other Wigens caps to choose from of course: The Rune, for example, is a great unisex fashion cadet cap in a summertime plaid with paisley lining; The Rolf, an ivy cap in the same cool plaid linen as The Rune; and the coolly conversative Buckley Newsboy in pincord. If you haven't yet seen the linen ballcap from Wigens, it's called The Isak, and has the sleek lines and superb fit you expect from this famed milliner of Sweden. It's such a pleasure to see the big boys creating ball caps that are fashionable and innovative -- just off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the Borsalino Pisa baseball cap, and those amazing ballcaps from 1333 Minna. Another fashionable variation on a theme is the longshoreman's linen ivy cap that Wigens calls The Ludde -- very handsome in a black and grey textured check pattern. The way they can recreate the look of a hat from casual to eye-popping is unerring, and you'll see a fine example with The Roland, a classic bucket hat. John B. Stetson always presents exemplary caps and hats, and does so again with the understated (and extremely classy) Gretna Ascot. This is a perfectly formed textured linen cap with an all cotton lining and you'll note how the Stetson pin, unobtrusively sized and placed, fits the overall muted sophistication of the cap. Can you tell I really like it? I really like the The Glenallen too, a sumptuous woven silk cadet cap in a muted herringbone pattern, also from JB Stetson.
If Christys'
of London floats your boat (along the Thames,
naturally), you'll rejoice in the high
crown of The Garfield Newsboy and that modern linen ivy cap, the fully-lined Delancy, which boasts
both leather
trim and brim. There's a sporty
cap (with mesh lining) in a cool cotton/linen blend, which I like to call The
Piccadilly that should spike your cuppa, and your British flag pin really stands out on The Big Ben Ivy's
broad black pinstripe. You won't see any flags at all, though, on the extremely subtle tone
on tone and stiff-upper-lip Kensington.
Wow, I'm a bit breathless now, but in a good way. Maybe I just need a nightcap.
