Ballcaps are one of the first hats many people wear. Ivy caps come a close second. Both the baseball cap and the ivy cap are perceived to be sporty and 'non-threatening' hats in our mostly hatless society: but we hat worshipers know better. Sporty, yes -- Kangol does ivys smart 'n sporty like nobody's business with The Ventair, The Argyle and The Waffle, for instance (as does Christys' of London, for that matter). But egads, man, you can't just say Stetson's suede ballcap, The Chieftain, is 'harmless'; or that the Borsalino ivy caps in blends of crisp linen and silk aren't simply magnificent. If you dare to categorize the Johnathan Richard Snap Brim Linen Ivy Cap as anything less than sublime, we may come to fisticuffs (but first I'll ask you nicely to be careful with my new Bandera, another Stetson fashion ivy).

Tell me honestly. Are you truly able to pass by the silk-lined Russell (an elegant ivy made from fine Italian linen) offered exclusively from Bailey of Hollywood, without a second glance? Could anyone be hard-hearted enough to look askance at the hand-finished Kip, or indeed any of the sophisticated ivys in Christys' London Collection, whether it be The Raleigh in houndstooth, The Edward in plaid, The Kent (an old-fashioned ivy body, updated with its leather-covered brim) or the fully-lined Oxford? When you think about it, is there a better description than 'luscious' for Wigens' striped ivy, The Gunnar Two? And then comes the dreaded matter of choice with that classic ivy, The Dagmar, so crisp in line and linen, and available in four glorious colors: yellow, black, white or red.
I don't know about you, but I get all stiff upper lip when I don my mesh lined Piccadilly or Big Ben (the latter in wide pinstripe), both ivy caps with Christys' British flag pin discreetly affixed. Of course, when the time arises to down a pint in style, I rely upon my broad stripe fashion ivy, The Chelsea. or sometimes, when I want to get all subtle, I get out that awfully fine tone-on-tone Kensington Ivy from Christys' and off I go!
Now off you go for some informed shopping. And if you don't come back with a grand ivy cap of your very own, then all I can say is: twisted seagrass!
