ivy caps in fur felt, such as the high crowned Cuffler (another Borsalino masterpiece) or The Ascot from Christys', and cowboy hats too, like the renowned dress western hat made famous by LBJ, The Open Road by Stetson. Stetson, by the way, offers a pinch front fedora in pure beaver too, they fittingly call The Pinnacle, and another top of the line fedora from them is the fur felt Firenze. All bases are covered here: the popular Stetson Weekender is an eye-catching and sporty men's hat; The Tehachapi is a modern and stylish pinch front dress hat; while the limited edition Pullman beaver fur felt fedora with telescope crown will blow you away.
I'm happy to say that one of the world's great headwear designers for women, Helen Kaminski, often crafts women's hats from fur felt, such as The Bechiti Rollable Cloche and The Espe (a round top cloche). There's also the refined Perlita cloche with removable orchid brooch, back by request this season. Kaminski fedoras and fall sun hats for women, like The Eros and the stingy brim Mina and the lovely Liana with asymmetric brim, are sophisticated and sleek. The Logan, on the other hand, with its exaggerated pinch front fedora-like crown and enormous brim is pure Australian outback exuberance with attitude to spare!
Some of the most elegant hats for men are fur felt designs in the pork pie silhouette, such as the Astucio Fantasy in light tan (from Borsalino of Italy) and the The Gordon stingy brim pork pie from Makins, which (in smooth bark brown) is a fitting tribute to that tall jazz man, Long Tall Dexter. Of course, the well known NYC hatter, Rod Keenan, has quite a collection of fur felt dress hats for men, including the satin-lined JFK fedora (an exclusive to HartfordYork.com); The Sedgewick, an elongated trilby with whimsical brass hands; and The Bow Tie Stingy Brim Trilby as well as his fedora with a variable brim, called The Montmarte, crafted from long-hair beaver fur felt. The Driver Ivy Cap is another Keenan creation, nicely lined with his signature "skyscape" lining.
Mr. Green of LA designs some good-looking hats too. There's the hand made Frank, a stingy brim fur felt dress hat; there's a pinch front fedora with a four-inch crown called The Fred; there's another hat (made by hand like the rest) called The David, and its velour finish and vintage silk trim brings this fedora from fine to fabulous; and then there's The Donald, extremely handsome in black with a light brown trim. Before you decide which hats to order, I suggest you treat yourself to a study of the Cassel Goorin hats too. True, The Clark is a blend of wool and fur felt, but this sloped fedora (with its extra wide grosgrain bow tie band and stingy brim) is worth your time. There's also the genuine velour fur felt Hayes Fedora from Cassel Goorin with its very stingy and turn down brim, and a pleated blue and brown vintage tie band, to consider. What's a man to do? Don't expect the choice to be made easier by Anthony Peto of Paris. With the Peto Stingy Brim and the embossed Bastille Stingy Brim, a fellow really could lose his head!
To recap (and there will be a test), we've got traditional fur felt hats like The Christys' Trilby and The Como from Borsalino; and we've got fur felt hats posing as modern travel-worthy fedoras for men including The Foldaway (one of my perennial favorites) and even a classic fur felt bowler, a la Charlie Chaplin's beloved derby. We've got casual fedoras including The Casual Fedora in Olive or Black, and stingy brims like the Allesandro from Borsalino. There are hand-blocked hats so pristine in design they can be worn with a suit or with jeans (The Makins Horace) and a hat that's a nod to the Great Mr. Calloway, The Cab, in lightest camel. The Indiana Jones series of fur felt fedoras includes The Texas Indy (a Grade 4X fur blend from Milano of Texas) as well as The Dressed Up Indy, and Scala has come through in fur felt with a classic Derby, a couple of safari-style fedoras (The Roma and The Capri), a very sharp dress fedora with center dent and a snap brim called The Venice, plus two stingy brim hats, namely The Sicily and The Sorrento.
Gee, I think I forgot one. Hang on to your hat while you browse, and let me take this from the top.
